Cumberland Marbles Program
A source of deep community pride, the Cumberland Marbles Program continues a distinctive local tradition of formal marbles competitions that can be traced back nearly a century. Since 1959, the program has participated in a unique partnership with the Cumberland Department of Parks and Recreation and the Allegany County School System; volunteers with the program teach marbles in public schools and hold school tournaments. Winners vie for the city championship at the long-standing, public marble rings in Cumberland’s Constitution Park. The city champions move on to compete in the National Marbles Tournament in Wildwood, New Jersey—since 1971, Cumberland has produced nine National Marbles Champions! Several representatives from the National Marbles Tournament are demonstrating with the Cumberland Marbles Program at the National Folk Festival.
